It has been over 25 years since AIDS was first publically reported. This virus has over the years transformed societies, influenced policies, and has been at the core of governments’ interventions especially in sub-Saharan Africa. There have been endless attempts to find a cure to this disease, none of which have yet been successful.
The evolution of AIDS is society has changed from being an abomination or cause of hysteria to a showbiz event. In some cases, politicians have argued that HIV does not cause AIDS and they were rightly criticized for it. What they should have been praised for, is raising the question of whether HIV solely causes AIDS. What is important now is not that knowledge of what causes AIDS but rather how to prevent the transmission of the disease. HIV together with a series of complex social and political factors causes AIDS.
Take the society drivers of HIV for example. Beliefs abound that having sex with a young virgin could cure AIDS. Of course science and common sense tells us that is not true. But looking deeper reveals the heart of the problem. Virginity has always been associated with purity, and in some societies AIDS victims are somehow considered unclean. The stigma against those infected, together with the need for acceptance encourages coherence to traditional dogma. In these same societies, counsel and information are derived from elders, traditional healers, and possible witch doctors whose word is deemed gospel truth. In the absence of more credible information about HIV/AIDS, all listeners will believe what they are told. In such cases, societal perceptions, more than just HIV would have aided and abetted AIDS.
Attempts at finding a cure for AIDS should therfore be concentrated as much in the societal and political realms as in the laboratories.

ReplyDeleteThe Swedish International Development Coorporation Agency (Sida) has developed the on-line platform to bring the general public closer to the realities of development work throughout the world and to involve them in the issues. The target audiences for the site are professionals, people involved in development issues and the general public. The goal of the platform is to raise awareness and generate discussion prior to, during and after the European Development Days (http://www.eudevdays.eu/) in Stockholm this October, and to engage the general public in the debate and questions of international development. The World Log is bringing the tools of the 21st century to bare on the issues to be discussed .
The World Log shows real stories and discussions from development work around the world in an easily accessible way. Entries are plotted on Google maps and marked up by topic, making blogs easliy available to those not versed in blog search tools. The platform will be heavily promoted during the European Development Days through several official sites such as the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Swedish EU Presidency website and the Sida website. As an aggregator, the goal of the platform is to drive as many people as possible to the actual blogs and engage them in actual development work discussions and activities from around the world.
Your organization is involved in international development and issues affecting development. I would like to ask for your help in contacting your coworkers and other organizations to inform them about our site. In particular we are looking for people who blog or post images and videos about development. Registration for the site is free and takes roughly 10 minutes.
Bloggers attach their blogs by simply copying and pasting in their RSS feeds into their World Log profiles. They can set up standard tags for entries, such as the countries they work in or write about and the issues they regularly address such as AIDS or water. This way when someone searches for articles, blogs and discussions about, for example, water, properly tagged articles appear. Specific tags for each articles can be added. For example if a blogger regularly writes about agricultural development in Rwanda but writes a blog entry about women's issues in Central Africa, he or she can tag that specific blog entry to reflect the different topic.
The World Log is not limited to blogs alone. Newsletters, photos and videos are all supported and encouraged. All that's needed is the RSS feed. The platform also supports discussions and comments based on entries so that bloggers can follow what readers are saying. Readers who click on an entry are directed to the original site so the blogger registers the hit. We have developed a widget that can be embedded in a site so readers see on-going discussions and topics on the World Log related to what is written about. Badges are also available (see below) for attaching to sites to show affiliation with the World Log.
There are no strings attached. You are passionate about the issues and development (which is why I am contacting you) and so are we. We do this to promote discussion and to engage the public, and we hope you will help us by promoting the site.
